Defending Our Voice: GTS Steps Up for Gabriola’s Ferry Users

When the channels of communication between a community and its vital services are closed, the community must build its own.

Following BC Ferries’ decision to disband the province’s Ferry Advisory Committees (FACs), the Gabriola Transportation Society (GTS) is taking decisive action. We are proud to announce the formalization of the Gabriola Ferry Transportation Committee (GFTC), a dedicated working group ensuring that Gabriolans retain a direct, human-to-human voice in our ferry system.

For over 30 years, FACs served as the essential bridge between ferry-dependent islands and the system they rely on. By shifting to online-only engagement, BC Ferries risks losing the nuanced, face-to-face dialogue that ensures our unique island needs are actually understood, not just processed.

The GFTC isn’t just a replacement; it’s a commitment to active advocacy. We are already moving the needle on:

  • Experience Card Equity: Delivering over 200 letters regarding top-up levels.
  • Common Sense Policy: Addressing the restrictions on EVs in need of repair.
  • Direct Accountability: Maintaining pressure on elected officials, the Minister of Transportation, and BC Ferries leadership.

We believe that a community is strongest when it speaks with one voice. You can read our full mission and strategy for the GFTC in the official press release below.

The GFTC is your committee. We will be discussing our upcoming advocacy goals and the plan for public meetings at the GTS Annual General Meeting on Sunday, April 12, at 1:00 PM at the Rollo. We look forward to seeing you there as we continue to work for a ferry system that serves our people first.
